Brain, Heart Matters: Grow Your Telomeres, Change Your Brain, and Lengthen Your Life!


During the past 20 years, I have been privileged to work closely with Daniel Amen, MD. The clinicians and I at Henslin & Associates have referred thousands of people to the Amen Clinics around the country for SPECT Brain Imaging. Telomeres are the “greenish-yellow” tips on the end of a chromosome (Picture above). Telomeres work like the plastic tips of shoelaces that protect the end of the chromosomes, the strings of genes in the heart of every cell that tell it what to do. Without telomeres our cells lose their ability to divide and would quickly die off.

A chromosome is simply the product of the DNA and the proteins that are attached to it. There are 23 pairs of the chromosomes in every human being. One set is inherited from the father, and one set is inherited from the mother. A DNA is a sort of a bio molecule. The entire DNA in cells can be found in individual pieces that are called chromosomes.

Aging, emotional stress, smoking, addictions, and lack of exercise shorten your telomeres. Dean Ornish, MD and his research staff followed 35 men with localized early-stage prostate cancer for five years. Ten of the men embarked on life style changes that included a plant based diet ( High in fruits, vegtables, and unrefined grains), low in fat, and refined carbohydrates. These men walked 30 minutes per day six days per week, stress reduction ( gentle yoga based stretching) breathing and meditation. They compared these ten men with the men who did not make any life style changes. The men that made the life style changes experienced an increase of telomere length of 10%! In contrast the men that did nothing had their telomeres decrease by 3%.

Omega 3’s May Reduce Telomere Shortening! In an Austrailian study 33 men and women who have been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment were split into three different groups that received different types of Omega 3 Supplements.
