Self-injury is a problem that has been growing among teens today. It hard for most people to comprend the inner world of the person who is prone to self-injury. Jerusha Clark, who is a best selling author in the Christian publishing, contacted me and asked me to co-author a book on self– injury. I gladly accepted the opportunity because she is a dynamic, committed Christian who will be impacting the world for Christ for decades to come. More importantly…self-injury is one of those secret, shame filled issues that no one talks about. My contribution to “Inside the Cutters Mind” was the case studies and the information on SPECT ( Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography) Brain Imaging.
Self-injury is so often thought of as a teen issue. Clinical experience has taught that there are many adults that struggle with this issues as well. Self –injury can run the gamut from cutting or burning one’s self, compulsive exercise to the point of physical injury, and compulsive masturbation to the point of self–injury. The person prone to self-injury finds themselves hurting them self to the point where sufficient physical pain is generated that a flood of endorphins are released from the brain. The tidal flood of endorphins are so strong that temporarily it removes the presence of pain.
This is a book that you will find helpful if you have know someone who is struggling with the nightmarish world of self- injury or if you are secretly struggling with it yourself. Pastors… specifically youth pastors would find this book helpful. If you are someone you love is struggling with this difficult issue find help soon. The longer this compulsion goes on untreated it becomes increasingly difficult to treat successfully.
